THE ORGANIZATION

The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment was established in 1995 in honor of Senator H. John Heinz III.  The Heinz Center is a non-profit, nonpartisan institution dedicated to improving the scientific and economic foundation for environmental policy.  The Center tackles some of the most important environmental issues of our time by convening business, environmental groups, academia, and government.

Our guiding philosophy is that we must all work together to find lasting solutions to environmental challenges and leave the earth a better place for future generations.

Position Summary:

The Development Associate plays an important role by ensuring a smooth flow of work/activities through the Development Department and by participating in all fundraising activities including donor and public relations, assisting with grant /proposal writing, and special events. The Development Associate works under the supervision of the Vice President for Development and External Affairs.  In addition the Development Associate works collaboratively with program directors and all staff members.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Fundraising

  • Independently and extensively research literature, the Internet, and other sources for prospective corporate foundations, government, and individual donors.
  • Arrange meetings with prospective donors for the Vice President for Development and External Affairs and President.
  • Assist in implementing an annual fundraising plan to increase giving.
  • Verify the accuracy of donor lists and monitor fundraising goals.  Create monthly fundraising reports and other database reports as needed.
  • Respond effectively to individual donor inquires including ensuring acknowledgement of all contributions within 48 hours of receipt.
  • Assist in researching funding sources and sponsors for coordination of the annual dinner and special events, to include recommending venue and preparing budgets.
  • Assist in scheduling, planning, and implementing fundraising and private meetings. 

GRANT PROSPECTING/PROPOSPAL WRITING

  • Assist in researching grant opportunities and drafting grant proposals and reports.
  • Research grant and resource opportunities through electronic and printed materials; make referrals for departmental consideration and collaboration.
  • Take the lead in drafting grant proposals to ensure grant submission criteria are met
  • Track grant reporting and draft grant reports by working closely with Finance staff on budgeting issues.
  • Work and act as a liaison with program staff in the preparation of proposals and reports.
  • Participate in technical training provided by funding agencies and stay informed of changing grant standards and guidelines.

COMMUNICATION

  • Oversee the production of major publications, including the annual report, newsletters and other relevant printed and online reports.
  • Manage the production and distribution of donor communications including donor. acknowledgment, solicitations, reports, newsletters, and other donor communications. 
  • Assist the VP for Development and External Affairs in the preparation and distribution of news releases as required.
  • Supervise regular updates of the Web site.
  • Assist with preparation of board meeting materials.
  • Work with consultants as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education

    • Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience

    • At least 3-5 years of demonstrated work experience, preferably in a not-for profit development office.
    • Excellent calendar management skills, including the coordination of complex executive meetings.

Skills & Knowledge

    • Highly organized and able to multitask, prioritize projects and tasks; must demonstrate attention to detail.
    • Strong computer skills, with proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
    • An effective communicator, with strong oral and written skills.
    • Ability to manage competing priories, exercise good judgment, and quickly identify and resolve problems with minimal supervision.
    • Must be flexible, culturally sensitive, and a team player. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact professionally with staff, partners, and donors; must demonstrate a positive attitude.
    • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters with the highest level of professional integrity.
    • Knowledge about environmental, conservation and / or public policy issues is a plus.
