Carnegie Mellon University Student Joins the Heinz Center as Summer Fellow

Mary AsheWashington, D. C. The Heinz Center welcomes Mary Ashe, a student at Carnegie Mellon University, who joins the Center as a summer fellow.   Ms. Ashe will be working with Senior Scholar Dennis Ojima to develop a critique of previously conducted biofuel life cycle assessments, also known as LCA’s.  Specifically her work will focus on feedstocks like corn and sugar cane.  Her critique will analyze various life cycle assessment procedures and compare the differing results.   The product of the analysis will be recommendations to improve and standardize the biofuel LCA process.

Ms. Ashe is a senior at Carnegie Mellon with a double-major in Civil Engineering along with Engineering and Public Policy.  She is a captain of the women’s soccer team and has received the University Athletic Association Academic Honor for three consecutive years (2006-2008).

This is the Heinz Center’s second summer fellow from Carnegie Mellon University.  In 2007, Bill Perkins’ research resulted in a co-authored report entitled, “A Survey of Climate Change Adaptation Planning.”

At the crossroads of science and environmental policy, the Heinz Center brings leaders together from business, government, academia, and environmental groups to brainstorm solutions that are both scientifically and economically sound.  Founded in 1995 in honor of Senator H. John Heinz III, the Center’s guiding philosophy is that only by working together can we solve today’s environmental challenges and leave the world a better place for generations to come.
